Simons Rock College of Bard

Simon's Rock photography program considers the key elements in the education of photography to be; technical knowledge, historical background, and critical and analytical skills.

Our curriculum seeks to nurture a disciplined approach to the production of independent work in each course, whether it is core studio or a senior thesis. Our comprehensive facility is furnished with the best professional equipment. The development and growth of each student photographer is supported by exposure to working artists, historians, writers and critics.

By its very nature, we feel that photography is a tool that promotes interdisciplinary study. Our program offers a wide range of courses that allow the exploration of photography by students with interests in the arts and humanities, as well as the sciences and social sciences.

Within the Daniel Arts Center are a film-processing studio, a darkroom complex that contains a 15-person black-and-white darkroom, and an adjoining four-person large format darkroom. There are four enlarged booths as well as a color processor in the color darkroom. The Electronic Arts Studio is equipped with a variety of lighting instruments and backdrops.

Photography classes are all scheduled in classrooms specifically equipped with areas for viewing, mounting and matting.
