From the beginning in 1945, Brooks Institute through its Professional Photography Program Brooks Institute has managed to hold true in their promise to provide an a student friendly learning environment. Today at the Institute, learning through experience is the basis of instruction in all programs. Close association between the teachers and students in the classroom, the darkroom and digital labs, and the field continues to build well-rounded professionals in the field of photography.

Having historically produced some of the finest visual artists in the field, this California-based photography school anticipates adding members of the next generations to their ranks. The Film and Video Production Program started at Brooks Institute in the middle of 1950s, stemming from the training Programs in Photography. The Brooks' students have the opportunity to master the art and craft of moviemaking as it uses the same hands-on approach to teaching and learning. Considered in the industry as one of the field's best kept secrets, the program proudly recognizes the popularity and familiarity of many graduating students in the field, some of which are: Isidore Mankofsky, Cinematography for The Muppet Movie and Somewhere in Time; Dominick Palmer, Cinematography on the TV series M*A*S*H; Robert Legato, Academy Award winner for Best Effects (Digital Domain) on the movie Titanic, Visual Effects Supervisor for The Aviator; and most recently, graduate Boris Undorf, Best Cinematography at New York's VisionFest '04' Festival for Sonata.

The early 90s saw the Institute beginning a tradition of international documentary expeditions. Excursions of this kind in China, Africa, India, and Southeast Asia were what paved the road for the Visual Journalism Program. Teaching truthful, non-fiction storytelling with industry-current digital equipment including digital still cameras, digital video, computers, are the main focus of this photojournalism. What makes Brooks one of the few all-digital college photojournalism programs in the US is its reliance on industry-current digital technology.

Brooks' Graphic Design program evolved as a response to demands from new media. In order to be successful, Brooks provides its students with the opportunity for the visual communicator to acquire knowledge and skills in a variety of disciplines, including; design, illustration, video and film, writing, and photography.
