Located in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area, the University of Louisville is a state supported research university. Until they became a university in 1970, it was a community-funded organization. There are three campuses in this University. Three miles from downtown Louisville you will find Belknap Campus nestled on 287 acres, home to seven of the eleven colleges and schools comprising the university. Located in downtown Louisville's medical complex, the Health Sciences Center houses the University of Louisville Hospital as well as the university's health related programs. The National Crime Prevention Institute and the Information Technology Resource Center are located on the 243-acre Shelby Campus in eastern Jefferson County.
