Alexandria Technical College

Program Focus Internet, Intranets, and Extranets are rapidly becoming standard business applications. Websites must be dynamic, functional, and visually appealing, while being easy to navigate. This certificate program prepares students to help businesses meet these needs. This certificate program consists of five courses that provide students with a solid foundation in web page creation, web graphics and animation, database connectivity, and web programming. Incorporating standard development practices and search engine "hit" techniques will be stressed. Hands-on learning is emphasized. Students will develop and post websites using Adobe software: Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, ColdFusion, and Homesite+. A laptop computer, leased from the college, is required. Qualifications Persons interested in pursuing the Web Development and Management Certificate program should have a keen interest in being an active participant in the ever changing evolution of the World Wide Web. Incoming students often enjoy surfing the Internet, playing computer games, and creating web pages. Courses are offered in the late afternoon or evening to allow high school students, current college students, and local working adults the ability to earn this certificate while engaging in other commitments. For those interested in earning a two year AAS degree in this area, this certificate may be applied toward the E-Commerce Web Developer program offered by Alexandria Technical College. Upon entrance to this certificate program, keyboarding, basic computer, and basic Internet skills are required. A rudimentary understanding of HTML is suggested but not required. This certificate program provides students with the skills needed to create web pages that stand out. Students will be able to manage a web site, create databases that receive and return information to web users, and create dynamic pages that utilize web-based programming such as JavaScript and/or ColdFusion. The Macromedia MX 2004 suite software is used for development of the web sites. This four-class certifi cate may be taken as your major emphasis of study or to complement your other educational goals. The courses are offered in the afternoon or evening.
